Welcome to Science at WHS!

What can you look forward to?

AP Biology- Science is more than a collection of facts, it is a process of observing and understanding the natural world. To that end, I try to foster scientific literacy and allow my students a large opportunity to practice the process of science. AP Biology is both a hard and a fun course. It provides students with an opportunity to develop a conceptual framework for modern biology, emphasizing applications of biological knowledge and critical thinking to environmental and social concerns. This is a college-level course, and students will be held to high expectations and mature responsibilities just like a college freshman taking Introduction to Biology. However, I feel strongly that this course needs to be a total and positive experience in science and biology, not just training for an exam!

Dual Credit Biology -  BIOL1406/1407 is offered at Weatherford High School through Weatherford College. Fall Semester introduces students into the physical and chemical organization of living organisms, cell structure, function, and metabolism.  Students learn to understand and interpret terms and discover principles covering all aspects of living organisms.  Spring Semester introduces students to Biological principles of Ecology, Evolution, Diversity, and Physiology of plant and animal. It also deals with plants and animal growth, tissues and systems biology and behavior.  Biology 1406/1407 is intended for science majors and pre-health professionals.

AP Environmental Science  - In APES, you will learn about the interrelationships in the natural world. You will also learn how to identify and analyze natural and human-made environmental problems, and how to determine risks and solutions associated with these problems.  By studying environmental issues from a global perspective, we can include sociological, economic and political perspectives.  We will attempt to determine if humans are on a sustainable path, and investigate the science behind the claims. APES is full of discussion about science, politics, economics, ethics, and how we can be true stewards of the world around us.

Chemistry - In Chemistry, students study a variety of topics that include characteristics of matter, use of the periodic table, development of atomic theory and chemical bonding, stoichiometry, gas laws, solution chemistry, thermochemistry, and nuclear chemistry. The goal of this course is to lead students towards a greater understanding of the chemical world around them through inquiry, analysis, experimentation, and mathematical manipulations. An emphasis will be placed on hands on learning, use of technology, and application to real-world situations. You will gain experience and skills necessary to succeed in our world today (see below).  As an added bonus, you might just have fun!

Keys to Success:
Collaboration - A process in which two or more people work together to realize common goals by sharing knowledge, learning, and building consensus.
Communication - The activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information through speech, visuals, writing, or behavior.
Creativity - The process where something new and valuable is created.
Critical Thinking - Skill that involves following reason and evidence to a conclusion, using a systematic approach to problem solving.
