OUR MISSION:

The Weatherford ISD Athletic Training Department is an integral part of the WISD Department of Athletics. The mission of WISD Athletic Training is to maintain and promote the health, safety, and welfare of the WISD student-athlete through prevention, recognition, evaluation, referral, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Under the guidelines of the University of the Interscholastic League, Texas State Board of Health and Human Services, Texas State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers, National Athletic Trainers Association and Weatherford Independent School District, WISD Athletic Training will provide the highest quality athletic training services that are readily and easily available to student athletes. The WISD Athletic Training Educational Student Assistant Program will enhance the healthcare provided to the student athletes while educating and challenging athletic training students in the field of sports medicine.

ABOUT ATHLETIC TRAINING

Weatherford ISD employs two full time athletic trainers. These individuals are licensed by the state of Texas and certified by the Board of Certification. Recognized by the American Medical Association as allied health professionals, a credentialed athletic trainer practices a form of health care that includes prevention, recognition, assessment, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. WISD athletic trainers are often one of the first heath care providers on the scene when injuries occur, and therefore are able to recognize, evaluate, and assess injuries and provide immediate care when needed. They are here to insure that the student athletes of this school district have the utmost care when it comes to their athletic injuries. A credentialed athletic trainer practices under the direction of a licensed physician.

PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICALS & UIL PAPERWORK

RANK ONE PORTAL (WEATHERFORD ISD ATHLETICS)

All students who participate in athletic activity at WISD must have a current physical on file in the office of the campus athletic trainer. The athletic trainer may require you to obtain a new physical upon his/her discretion. Reason may include such things as; new injury, illness, accident, or surgery. You may choose where to obtain this physical, however WISD offers opportunities at the end of the spring to obtain one through the district sports medicine team at a low cost. These dates will be posted after spring break every year.

MEDICAL DISQUALIFICATION/RETURN TO PARTICIPATION

Medical disqualification from participation is determined by collaboration between the student athlete’s physician and the staff athletic trainer. The staff athletic trainer works under the direct supervision of the physician and will follow his/her directions for treatment and rehabilitation of the student athlete. Under certain situations the staff athletic trainer has the option of medically disqualifying a student athlete from participation when it is in his/her judgement that further harm would come to the athlete by participating.

If a student athlete is disqualified from participation by a physician, a physician is the only medical professional who can clear them to participate under the supervision of the athletic trainer. All athletes who see a physician, or are instructed to see a physician, must have a signed clearance by that physician before returning to participation. At no time will the athlete be given permission to participate by a parent, coach, or athletic trainer when it contradicts a physician's orders. The staff athletic trainer may return the athlete to participation when it does not contradict the orders of a physician.

It is recommended that the staff athletic trainer or coach be notified prior to taking an athlete to the doctor. Generally most injuries are minor in nature... i.e. sprains, strains, etc.., and can be rehabilitated and treated in the athletic training room. If you choose to go to the doctor without notifying the athletic trainer or coach, then it is your responsibility to obtain the required paperwork from the doctor. If the athlete is medically disqualified from participation, the procedures as stated above will be followed.
