hello AP Physics today we're going to discuss sections 2.4 through 2.6 of your textbook we watch the free lecture video Excel rhaetian in class you can view this video at the mastering physics website  we're now going to define a new motion to describe an object whose velocity is changing this term is called acceleration the ratio of change in velocity to change time is known as the rate of change of velocity or acceleration  this ratio of change in velocity divided by Egypt time is also the slope of a velocity versus time graph recall that if you have a velocity versus time did the slope  is always changing the Y divided by changing the X but for this graph what's your measuring on the y-axis is velocity and what's your measuring on the x-axis is time and we say this we see that this the same ratio as above so when we take the slope of a line  on a velocity versus time graph that gives us the duration we now need to also give a unit for acceleration  and the common unit for acceleration will be meters per second squared also want to let you know that there is a class video made by one of the authors of your textbook on page 39 of your text I encourage you to take a look at that video then we're going to see we can graph or find an acceleration graph acceleration versus time from analyzing a velocity versus time recall that the slope of a velocity versus time graph is going to give us the acceleration so during this first segment on the velocity versus time graph we will see that the slope is constant so this is going to give us a constant rayshun all the acceleration versus time graph if you would have calculated the slope of that first at segments it would of course bonded to the value shows of the y-axis of your acceleration versus time graph  the second segment on your velocity versus time graph shows a constant how to eat with zero slope so we would represent a constant acceleration of 0 as such on our acceleration versus time craft the last the direction the motion and easy way to remember this is in chart form if we take a look at velocity and acceleration we should recall that they're both vectors in we indicate the direction of a vector with a positive or A negative so if I have a positive velocity and a positive acceleration I'm telling you that both of those vectors are pointing in the same direction just like a negative velocity and a negative acceleration those are also both pointing in the same direction playtime did both your velocity and your acceleration vectors point in the same direction your object has to be speeding up but if you have a positive velocity and negative acceleration or a negative acceleration  and I are thinking of a lawsuit acceleration that represent that they are both in the opposite graph the is also positive since it has a positive slope so when you have a positive velocity and a positive acceleration your object has to be speeding up take a look at the second picture from our motion diagram at the top we can see that the velocity vectors pointing to the left while the acceleration vector is pointing to the right that should indicate that the object is slowing down and you can see that in the are the velocity vectors that are shown but now take a look at the graph from the graph we see that there is a negative velocity because stop the negative section of the graph but this slope is positive  which means the acceleration must be POS if you have a positive acceleration and a negative velocity your object has to be slowing down  the third situation from our motion diagram we can see that the velocity is moving to the right while the acceleration is moving to the left so they should indicate that your object is slowing down which you see in your motion diagram but now take a look at the graph your velocity is positive because it's all dup top part of your graph but the acceleration has to be negative because the acceleration is represented by the slope of the when the slope is negative again here the graph even represents a positive velocity in a negative acceleration which indicates the object is slowing down it finally situation number for for the indicated with negative velocity and a negative acceleration because the slope was negative both have the same signs so it has to be speed it up remember you have to take a look at both the direction changing X comes out as 11.25 meters according to significant figures rounded this to 11 meters for our final answer when you're doing problem solving activities in this class did some strategies that you might want to use you can find in a table in your book jobs involving constant acceleration speeding up slowing down vertical motion horizontal motion can all be treated with the same problem solving strategies make sure you prepare for the problem by drawing a visual overview of the problem this should include a motion diagram a pictorial representation a list of values a graphical representation may also be used for certain problems then we're going to need to solve the problem which is the math solution based on the three equations that were given earlier  the equations are phrased in the terms of the variable X is customary in your textbook to use why for the motion in the vertical direction that you don't have to do this you can use x for horizontal or vertical mode you want to use the equation the best matches what you know and what you need to find for example if you know acceleration and time hair looking for a change of velocity the first equation given would the initial velocity times time plus 1/2 t-squared  substituting in the initial velocity is zero X the time of 150 seconds plus what app the acceleration was 18 meters per second squared times of time
