Welcome to Science at WHS!
What can you look forward to?
A.P. BIOLOGY - Science is more than a collection of facts, it is a process of observing and understanding the natural world. To that end, I try to foster scientific literacy and allow my students a large opportunity to practice the process of science. AP Biology is both a hard and a fun course. It provides students with an opportunity to develop a conceptual framework for modern biology, emphasizing applications of biological knowledge and critical thinking to environmental and social concerns. This is a college-level course, and students will be held to high expectations and mature responsibilities just like a college freshman taking Introduction to Biology. However, I feel strongly that this course needs to be a total and positive experience in science and biology, not just training for an exam!
A.P. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (APES) - In AP Environmental Science, you will learn about the interrelationships in the natural world. You will also learn how to identify and analyze natural and human-made environmental problems, and how to determine risks and solutions associated with these problems. By studying environmental issues from a global perspective, we can include sociological, economic and political perspectives. We will attempt to determine if humans are on a sustainable path, and investigate the science behind the claims.
CHEMISTRY - In a nutshell, Chemistry is concerned with the physical and chemical properties of substances, the nature of matter, and the study of chemical reactions and processes. You will be expanding your knowledge and understanding of the chemical world around you through interactive labs, online activities as well as various group and individual projects. In addition to learning science concepts, you will gain experience in skills necessary to succeed in our world today (see below). As an added bonus, you might just have fun!
Keys to Success:
Collaboration - A process in which two or more people work together to realize common goals by sharing knowledge, learning, and building consensus.
Communication - The activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information through speech, visuals, writing, or behavior.
Creativity - The process where something new and valuable is created.
Critical Thinking - Skill that involves following reason and evidence to a conclusion, using a systematic approach to problem solving.
This will be my third year as a Roo, and my eighth teaching overall. I have lived in Weatherford with my husband and children (Savannah - 14, Luke - 8) for many years. I graduated from Southwestern University with a Bachelor's in Biology, and received my Masters in Biology at Texas A&M Commerce December 2016. During my spare time I am a proud soccer and horse mom :)
